1. While the first three gospels present historical accounts, the Gospel of John presents the mystery behind the story, allowing us to know, through revelations, the spiritual depths.
2. The four living creatures in Ezekiel had the faces of a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle’s face. The Gospel of Matthew reveals Christ as a lion, as the King of the Kingdom of Heaven; Mark portrays the Lord as an ox, a Servant of God; Luke describes the Lord as a man, the Man-Savior. The gospel of John, then, reports Jesus as God Himself, being represented by the figure of an eagle (Ez 1:10).
3. John’s writings carry us on eagles’ wings so that we can have a bird’s-eye view from on high. The gospel of John does not present the genealogy of Jesus, as it reports Him as God. The people of Israel were God’s brood, whom He carried in His wings. Today, we too are that spiritual brood.
4. The gospel of John takes us to the High, the Sublime, the eternity where God dwells, where we will have a panoramic view and see how God sees. After the seven letters to the seven churches in Asia, John saw an open door in heaven and a voice said to him: “Come up here”! God doesn’t want us to look at the things of the earth, where there is so much death and distractions, He wants to take us up, so that we see the things from above and on above!
