- In John 5:39, the Jews who did not believe in the Lord Jesus searched the Scriptures, thinking that they had eternal life in it, but they did not want to go to Him to have life. The Scriptures are one thing, but going to the Lord to have life is another. Therefore, we need the Scriptures, and we need the voice, the speaking of the Lord (John 5:39-40).
- A word without the power and wisdom of God produces no effect. It is not biblical knowledge or theology that will give us power. The word of the apostles was different from the words of theology or doctrines, for it had the demonstration of the Spirit and power. The early church persevered in the teaching of the apostles, and so the work of God prospered. (1 Cor 2:4; Acts 2:42, 47).
- The word that the apostle John spoke was the word of life, eternal life itself. If the church believed the word that he preached, that word would cause them to have fellowship with the apostles, and this fellowship was with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:2-3).
- Through the Word of life, announced by the apostle, we were introduced into the fellowship of life with God and with our brothers and sisters. However, if we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth, since God is light. The issue of sin is not only an ethical issue, but it involves the danger of interrupting the circulation of life (1 John 1:3, 6-7) (Daily Food, Book 1, Week 3, Friday, p. 52).
