- God provides external situations, trials. He allows such trials to expose what is in our hearts, because they are impure and need the purity of faith. Trials have a double function: to show us what is in our hearts and to lead us to depend totally on the word of God (Deut. 8:2-3).
- Thanks be to God, we go on and serve not because of our ability, not because we are eloquent, not because of theology, but because the word instilled in us accomplishes the work of God. We have never seen the Lord Jesus physically, but we are filled with joy when we speak of the Lord. Then it is as if we were seeing Him. Consequently, we obtain an inexpressible and glorious joy, and the end of our faith: the salvation of our souls (1 Pet. 1:8-9).
- The expression “burning fire” is “purosis”, which means combustion in a furnace at a very high temperature. Peter is referring to a burning fire that is used to refine gold and silver. The natural man likes praise and applause. No one likes to hear criticism, but they do like to hear praise. Praise and commendation will test the heart to see what is really inside it (1 Pet. 4:13; Prov. 27:21).
- Today we praise the Lord because we can enjoy the word and the fellowship of life. We need to value this more! The word we receive is what generates the circulation of life. The church life, with the fellowship of life, is a gift from God (Daily Food, Book 1, Thursday, p. 30).
