- The “root” of false teachers is the same as the fallen angels described in the sixth chapter of Genesis and the libertine society at the time of Lot. Therefore, God, the righteous judge, will judge them with the same weight of judgment (2 Pet 2:1-9).
- False teachers are those who have long since stopped walking according to the leading of the Spirit. We cannot walk to gratify our own lusts; we must do the will of the Lord (2 Pet. 2:10; Eph. 1:9-10; Matt. 7:21).
- When we do not walk according to the Spirit, we begin to despise any kind of authority. We cannot go against the authority established by God. We need to honor our parents, the authorities of human government, and especially the authorities that the Lord has instituted in the church (Rom 13:1-7; 1 Pet 2:13-17; Eph 6:1-4; Col 3:20).
- Our desire should be to please the Lord, just as Paul did: “Therefore we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. But we are confident, being absent from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Cor. 5:6-8) (Daily Food, Book 2, Week 3, Thursday, p. 48).
