- The kingdom of Judah was taken into Babylonian captivity because they did not heed the word of the Lord. God sent prophets to speak to His people, but the people persecuted them, ridiculed them, and did not obey the word of God. So there was no way out, and the people were taken into captivity. This is a lesson for us. Therefore, let us obey the word of the Lord (2 Chr 36:15-16).
- Jerusalem lay in ruins seventy years after the Babylonian captivity: without walls, therefore without government, without law, and without security. But God did not give up on His purpose and sent Nehemiah to restore the walls. The walls represent an environment within which there is a government (Neh 1:2-3).
- The early history of the church was wonderful, vibrant, and vigorous because God’s words were heard and practiced there through the teachings of the apostles. And when the people diligently listened to the voice of the Lord and practiced His Word through fellowship, the church life was strong and vigorous, and the number of people grew every day (Acts 2:42).
- “Let us not take the word of the Lord as mere teaching, but let us understand that, if we feed on the word and practice it, the divine seed planted in us spontaneously bears fruit (James 1:22; John 15:4 5)” (Daily Food, Book 5, Week 2, Tuesday, p. 26).
