1. From Abraham would come a “descendant.” This term is in the singular and not in the plural, because it does not refer to the children of Israel, but to Christ. In Christ all the peoples and families of the earth would be blessed. Abraham’s blessing is the promised Spirit (Gen. 12:1-4, 7; Gal. 3:14, 16).
2. Abram was childless and his wife was barren. So Sarai suggested to her husband that he have a son with her servant Hagar. Thus, Ishmael was born when Abraham was 86 years old. After Abraham used his own efforts to obtain the fulfillment of the promise, God did not appear to him for thirteen years (Gen. 16:1-16).
3. Let us not use our own efforts to help God in His work, but simply walk in His presence. Today we know that walking in the presence of the Lord is to hear and obey His word. Those who walk in the presence of God become perfect. It is not by our ability, skill, or cleverness, but by walking in the presence of the Almighty (Gen. 17:1-4).
4. “Whoever serves the Lord must have the form of a servant, just as Jesus did. Although He was God Himself, Jesus did not cling to His position; rather, He took the form of a servant” (Phil. 2:5 8) (Daily Food, Book 6, Week 2, Tuesday, p. 24).
