- In verse 2 of Nehemiah chapter 7, we read: “I gave the charge of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the leader of the citadel, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many”. (Nehemiah 7:2). We all need to be faithful and fear God, but those who exercise leadership must have these qualities even more pronounced, “more than many” (Nehemiah 7:2; 2 Timothy 2:2).
- There is no point in having a wall if there is no one to guard it. The gates of Jerusalem were guarded by gatekeepers, a role that we all need to fulfill today. Furthermore, the need for vigilance also extends to homes. We see that each person needs to have a vigilant attitude towards his own home (Nehemiah 7:3; Josh. 24:15).
- Compared to the inhabitants of the whole earth, we are still few in number, a little flock. We cannot settle for this situation. We must accept the task and strive to preach the gospel. We have little strength, but with the Lord’s blessing, we will be able to do this work! (Matt. 24:14; Luke 12:32).
- “The Lord is preparing the birth of the man-child, made up of those who fight for the kingdom of God. He has prepared us to be part of the man-child, those who do not love their own life, glory, or self-interest, but only the Lord and His appearing” (Rev. 12:5,11) (Daily Food, Book 5, Week 3, Wednesday, p. 4-5).
