1. The tree of life demonstrates that God’s central purpose in creating man is that he might receive Him as life. This is why He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, with which He formed the human spirit, capable of receiving God Himself as life (Gen. 2:7, 9).
2. In John 15, Jesus states that He is the true vine and the Father is the vinedresser (v. 1), and His disciples are the branches of this vine (v. 2-8). This illustration brings a deeper understanding of the tree of life. God’s intention in the Garden of Eden was for man to eat of the fruit of the tree of life; and, upon receiving divine life, to be wholly taken over by it, becoming part of the vine as a branch.
3. Man can do nothing on his own; only if he receives God’s life and remains connected to the Lord will the divine life itself make him bear abundant fruit. This connection of life is so that man does not fall into the same error as Lucifer, created as the seal of perfection, whose heart was corrupted by pride, becoming Satan, the adversary of God (John 15:5; Ezekiel 28:12, 17).
4. “The man the Lord looks upon is the one who is afflicted and contrite in spirit and who loves His word (Isaiah 66:2). This is the condition we should seek for” (Daily Food, book 4, week 3, Friday, p. 47).
