1. Jacob was called by Joseph to go down to Egypt. Logically, because of the famine in the land, he should go to survive. Yet, he consulted the Lord, and God gave him peace of mind to go down. This shows us that even when we have a logical solution, we need to consult the Lord (Genesis 46:1-4).
2. Israel went down to Egypt because God wanted their descendants to multiply abundantly, so that they would one day become a great nation. They were taken to the best land in Egypt to strengthen themselves, be fruitful, and multiply. After all, they held the birthright line, the line of blessing, to do God’s will (Genesis 47:27; Exodus 1:7).
3. At the end of his life, Jacob did not remember his own skills, all that had happened to him, or the things he had suffered. He realized that man’s path is made by the Lord. Jacob’s testimony was that the Almighty God appeared to him and blessed him. This is also our story; it is not about all that we have done through our own skills, but about the God who appeared to us one day and blessed us (Genesis 28:12-14; 48:1-3; Proverbs 20:24; Jeremiah 10:23).
4. “Therefore, as we get older, we cannot grow old spiritually. My age is advancing, but I need to keep myself constantly renewed for what the Lord is speaking now. (…) The Lord always speaks in a fresh and new way, and leads us through various spiritual experiences, both personal and collective in the church” (Ephesians 4:22-23) (Daily Food, book 9, week 4, Wednesday, p. 62).
